CLAS – Frequently Asked Questions


  1. Can I apply for CLAS on behalf of an accused person in remand?
    No. CLAS does not accept applications on behalf of accused persons in remands. The accused person may apply for CLAS through their remand institute.

  2. What if my charges are not covered under CLAS?
    If your charges are not covered under CLAS, you may contact our Community Legal Clinics at 6536 0650 for further assistance.

  3. How will I know if the Court has formally charged me?
    The Investigating Officer/Prosecuting Officer will instruct you to attend Court for the offences that you are being investigated for.

  4. What documents do I need to submit?
    Instructions pertaining to the submission of your Court and financial documents will be provided to you by email.

  5. What if I am having difficulties with my online application?
    The online application process has been simplified to allow you to seek assistance easily.

    Should you require further assistance in filling out the form, please approach our office at the State Courts (Help Centre) for on-site assistance. Our counter operates from Monday to Friday, from 9.00am to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.00pm (closed on weekends and public holidays).

    Applicants proceeding down for on-site assistance will be required to obtain a queue ticket from the Level 1 Help Desk located in the lobby of the State Courts. There may be a waiting time, depending on the volume of applicants we are servicing for the day.

    Due to the sensitive nature of the information involved, please note that we will not be providing assistance through our hotline for the completion of your CLAS application form.

  6. How long will it take to assign a lawyer to my case?
    If you qualify for legal aid, it may take up to 3 months for a lawyer to be assigned to your case.

  7. If I am a foreigner who has been rejected by CLAS, Can I apply to the PDO instead?
    Criminal legal assistance rendered by the PDO is only open to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. Foreign applicants seeking legal aid may consider re-applying for CLAS.
